The Lost Tape: Andy’s Terrifying Last Days Revealed is a short movie that was included on the DVD release of Zack Snyder’s 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead.
The short film was actually made by Zack Snyder and was intended as a companion piece to the main film showing what happened to one of the survivors in the story.
The short film centers around ‘Andy’, who was the guy that owned the gun-shop that was situated opposite the shopping mall in the film. In the remake of Dawn of the Dead, the survivors in the mall tried to get across to the gun-shop for weapons, without initially realizing that there was a survivor in there.
The film is presented in a ‘found footage’ style documentary, and it is based around a video diary that Andy is recording in the hope it may prove useful for future reference. It charts about 1 month in his life and opens on May 7th, and the final entry is recorded on June 6th…the day Andy dies. Throughout the film, we learn a bit more about Andy’s back-story through snippets of an old family video that Andy is recording his current video diary over.
Through the film we follow Andy as he tries to keep the gun-shop boarded up and secure, and we follow his slow descent into madness as he becomes more and more aware of the futile situation that he is in, and despite the amount of guns and ammo he has, there just seems to be no way to be able to take all the zombies out.
We eventually see where Andy’s story crosses over with the main story from Dawn of the Dead, and he subsequently makes contact with the survivors in the mall. The two films full overlap when Chip the dog enters the gun-shop and in the process a zombie enters and bites Andy.
