Super Zero: Badass Journey Into Zombie Awesomeness

Super Zero: Badass Journey Into Zombie Awesomeness‘ is a 2014 short comedy film directed by Mitch Cohen and stars Umberto Celisano, Giselle Gilbert, Al Bernstein, and Tyler White.

Aside from having an amazing title, this short film is great fun and the plot follows a loser called Josh Hershberg, who has nothing left to live for suddenly finding himself in the center of a zombie apocalypse….where he finds out that he has something of value.

The film opens with the protagonist learning from his doctor that he has terminal brain-cancer on the same day that the world learns that water is found on Mars.

As the prospect of life in the universe seems possible, the main character learns that his life is going to be cut very short indeed.

Dealing badly with his brain-cancer diagnosis, Hershberg tries to hang himself, but he is interrupted by his own incompetence…and the fact that the returning Mars mission crashes on Earth spreading water-borne microbes that results in a virus outbreak that turns people into zombies. Watch out for a cameo by Bobak Ferdowsi (the NASA employee involved in the Curiosity Mars landing who went viral after his ‘stars’ haircut was picked up on News cameras) who has a brief appearance as one of the scientists being interviewed on the News about the Mars mission.

Anyway, not to give too much away, Hershberg finds that his brain cancer (“Basically everything in my head is floating in cancer“) is actually a feature that will save his life…..the zombies won’t eat him as he is ‘tainted meat’. His reason to kill himself has become his reason to live.

The film last for about 15 minutes and basically sets up an interesting premise that sees Hershberg join up with some survivors and the credits roll and their adventures are just about to begin.

The script is snappy, the acting is great, and the production values are slick for a short film that is intended as a taster for a feature film to come…..assuming funding is found. It feels like it is about to develop into a zombie apocalypse version of ‘Kick Ass‘, which can only be a good thing.
