George A. Romero’s ‘Day of the Dead‘ was released in 1985 and it is the third film in his zombie series.
‘Day of the Dead‘ is probably the bleakest and darkest film of the series, portraying little hope for the few survivors in a world that has been overrun by the living dead. To make things even more depressing the humans that are holed up in a military bunker show no hope of getting on and resolving their differences for long enough to work together to try and secure some hope of a future.
The opening title screen sums up the film beautifully and presents an arresting but simple shot of a zombie shambling through a deserted town until he comes fully into the shot, blood dripping from his mangled face, with the sun burning brightly behind him – humanity may be decimated but the universe doesn’t give a shit and the sun shines brightly on a new day.
And for typographic nerds, this is probably the best font used for the movie title in all the dead films.
